Installing Mass Planner on Mac os X

On 17.05.2014, by

At this point Mass Planner does not work natively on a Mac and as we saw that some of the people that want to try it have a Mac we’ve thought to make a short tutorial to show you how you can still use Mass Planner if you are on a Mac.

There are two ways you can do this. Either install a virtual machine on your computer running Windows, or get a separate cheap windows VPS and install Mass Planner there. You can get a cheap VPS at under $10/month but maybe some of you just want to test Mass Planner first so they don’t want to invest in anything that is why we’ll be talking about the first option here, installing a virtual machine on your Mac.

So first things first. Installing the virtual machine. For the Mac users there are a couple of viable options, each with its pros and cons, we have chose to use VirtualBox as it’s a free option and a very good one. Your first step is to head over to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and get the latest version of virtualbox. After you download it go ahead and install it. Installing it is pretty straightforward but if you need any help here are the instructions from their site.

Here’s how the virtualbox looks like after you’ve installed it. As you can see from the image I’ve also installed a windows image, we’ll talk more about that next.

virtual machine installed

Now that you have the virtual machine installed all there’s left to do is install windows on it, here you will have to make a small decision. There are several ways you can get a windows copy to install it:

  • you already have a windows license – the easiest – all you need to do is install that copy
  •  you can get a 30 days trial from the Microsoft site – this will work but 30 days go fast
  • you can get a 90 days trial from the Microsoft site – this is what we’ll do
  • you can get a lifetime windows copy from torrents – not quite legal

For the purposes of this tutorial we’ll keep it legal so we choose to get a 90 days trial license from the Microsoft site. 90 days should suffice and it’s quite a long time, after those 90 days have passed you ca just re-install windows and have another 90 days free trial and that’s really easy to do and you’ll have windows legally on your computer.

Moving on, go to the Microsoft site and get the 90 days trial license, they will only give a license like this for the latest widows, at this moment that is Windows 8.1, direct link is : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh699156.aspx . Select the version you want, x86 or x64 and press the Get Started Now Button. You will need to login with a live.com account ( an @outlook.com account will work too) in order to continue, if you don’t have one make one fast, it’s free and it takes only 1-2 minutes. After logging in you will get to a little form that you need to fill to get the 90 days trial windows copy, this is quite easy and should take under 1 minute, here’s how the form looks like so you have a better idea if you’re in the correct place:

windows form 3

Fill the form fast, you can either enter you details or something at random it doesn’t really matter. After everything is done just click continue and start downloading windows. It will be a .iso file, just remember where you’ve downloaded it. This can take some time depending on your internet connection as the package is a little over 3.5gb

Now, if you have virtualbox installed and also your copy of Windows, all you need to do is install that Windows in your virtual machine. Open up virtualbox and click on the New button, this will bring up a new window, give a name to your new virtual windows and select what version of windows you’re installing. Next, select how much RAM you want to allocate for your virtual machine. I suggest you go for around 2 gb ( if you have enough RAM ) so it runs smoothly and fast. If not, 1gb should suffice.

select ramClick next and now you’ll need to create the virtual HDD for your new virtual machine. Choose “Create a Virtual hard drive now” and click Create. Now select VDI, or leave it like that if it’s already selected and click Next again. Here choose “Fixed Size” and click next again. The final step is choosing how big you want your virtual HDD to be. I would suggest you go for around 25gb if you have enough space on your computer, this will be enough for your needs. If you don’t have enough space though you can go lower, 10gb should work ok. Click Create !

Now you should see in virtual box you new virtual computer with the name that you gave it. It should be powered off by default, go ahead and double click it and it should start. When it first starts it will ask you what to install, choose the .iso file that you downloaded earlier and go through all the steps of installing Windows on your virtual machine. This will take some time depending on your computer but you should have no problems installing it, windows is pretty self explanatory.

Congratulations, if you’ve followed this guide so far you should have a 90 days working version of windows in your virtual machine. You can now proceed and install Mass Planner in there and start changing the way you do your Social Marketing.

Can you please send me instruction on using a VPS instead of the virtualbox?

    1. Johnny says:

Hi Brigid, here are the full instructions on how to get a VPS and install Mass Planner on it : http://www.massplanner.com/full-instructions-get-free-windows-vps-year/

Do you have plans to make MassPlanner compatible with the Mac, without downloading Windows products?

    1. Johnny says:

Not in the near future, we’re still concentrating on ironing out bugs and adding more features and making it compatible for Mac would mean rebuilding it from scratch

      1. Ann says:

🙁 I am also adding my vote to make it compatible with IOS devices!!

      2. Alex says:

Please please, we need it available to OSX!

      3. Jess says:

I too am encouraging a Mac version

  3. Laurie says:

Wow! MassPlanner looks like the answer to my prayers, but all of my computers are Mac. I have a popular news website that posts 50+ articles a day and I don’t like the idea of leaving my computer on all of the time, and I live in an area with frequent power outages. I really wish you would turn this into a web app like Buffer – you’d make a killing! Cheers.

    1. Johnny says:

Hi Laurie, unfortunately web app like buffer are a lot more limited in regards to what you can do and traffic you can use, having this on your personal computer give you a lot more freedom and usability. What you can do in your case is install it on a VPS. It’s like having it online, it will run 24/7, won’t care if you can power outages or mac and you can connect to it through remote desktop any time and see how it runs.

  4. Fransisca says:

Im lost, how do I install the massplanner for windows installer on Mac after I set up the virtualbox? Help!

    1. Johnny says:

      Hi Fransisca,

Virtualbox is a tool that lets you install windows on your mac in a virtual machine. So after you install virtualbox you also need to install a windows on it, I have detailed the process in the guide above. Alternately you can just get a free windows vps from amazon for 1 year – http://www.massplanner.com/full-instructions-get-free-windows-vps-year/

whats the best way to reinstall windows after it has run out? any other way then creating a new “virtual computer”? can you use the same email in the new set up? thank you

    1. Johnny says:

After you create a virtual machine you can save that state of the machine at that point. After that install windows, when you need to reinstall just restore the machine to that point then re-install. You’d better go for a different email just to make sure.

      1. Charlotte Kosc says:

How do I reinstall and restore the machine to that point?

Have any osx users successfully ran massplanner through winebottler?

    1. Johnny says:

I honestly don’t know, I haven’t heard about anyone but if they did they might not have told me. You are welcome to try and if it does let us know as well 🙂

  7. Andy says:

I’m already running Parallels on my Mac… Where can I find information about using Virtualbox together with Parallels?

    1. Johnny says:

You don’t need to use both of them, if you’re using Parallels and have windows installed you can use that one for Mass Planner as well. The above method is one way of installing windows and using our software, it’s not the only one though.

  8. Joe Urban says:

Love MassPlanner, rich feature set, awesome support and does everything it says it does! Very intuitive as well! One question though is it compatible with Wine?

    1. Johnny says:

It’s not, haven’t tested it but I don’t think you’ll be able to make it work the right way with Wine.( You can however use Mass Planner and drink a glass of wine 🙂 )

  9. Tee says:

Hello can it be any windows OS?

Ive downloaded mass planner and Virtual Box on my Mac. I keep trying to download Windows enterprise on my mac and it gets to a point and gives the error message: “Image Not Recognised”. Any tips on how I get around this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. Johnny says:

yes, any windows higher than xp should work, make sure you install .net before installing mp and if it still doesn’t work just get the MP files not the installer and run that.

  10. juan says:

I tried with 7.1 32 bit and 10 64 bit in virtual box and I can’t even get the installer to run… HELP!

    1. Johnny says:

Why, what error are you encountering? Please contact our support team and they will help you with this.

  11. MelAnn Morales says:

What would actually be easier is if you came up with a Mac option. I use Mac because I hate windows. Last thing I’m gonna do is install Windows on my machine! Too bad, too. Your solution looks awesome.

    1. Johnny says:

Actually that wouldn’t be easy at all for us 🙂 A Mac version would be we have to re-build everything from scratch and that is not easy to do 🙂

    2. Kathryn says:

Fully agree! Crazy with the amount of Mac users, especially in the digital field?! Was super excited for this tool until I realized I had to let windows near my mac :/ Let us know when it’s Mac compatible.

      1. Veronika says:

Exactly! Could have perhaps rolled out the Mac version first, as most creatives use Macs.. Waiting for your Mac version and hoping it would come soon.

  12. Ann Kristin says:

I have dowloaded both virtual box and window on my mac. When i try to download mass planner, it starts downloading on my mac, not in the virtual box. How do I download mass planner on that?

    1. Johnny says:

Well, you need to install virtual box, install windows, and inside there download mass planner. Contact our support if you’re having trouble with this step.

  13. Lana says:

Im trying to instal the “virtual box” and it got stuck during “verifying”. Not verifying at all actually. Guy, why you made it so complicated? I realised its for windows only, only after doing my payment. Now I have to cancel whole subscription and ask someone to do this for me. Since obviously Im not even able to instal the virtual box. The thought of doing all that rest gives me a headache.

    1. Johnny says:

Hi Lana, unfortunately we don’t have a OS X version, contact our support though and they will do their best to help you with this.

  14. ady says:

Is there anyone that can do this for me? I tried to download both but when I click run on my VM it says fatal not found. ? #sos Is it easier to go the VRS amazon or what have you route?

  15. Nicklas says:

Please if you want to almost double your users build mass planner for OS they have round 800 million users

  16. Federica says:

Hello, if I do all this you said will I still have my MAc interface when I turn on my Mac? Get I get access to the windows one just whenever I need it?

    1. Johnny says:

Yes, that’s right, you still have your mac interface and access windows only when you need it.

  17. Vivian says:

I really hope a mac version is in development, I would definitely try your program when it is available!

  18. Kate says:

Followed the instructions, but it didn’t ask me what I wanted to install. So it’s just sitting there with a hard drive erroring out with no bootable medium to be found. How do I even get this installed?

  19. Clay says:

My situation is the same as Kate’s. I’ve tried opening the ISO file and it just opens up with about 8 folders and no option to install. On my virtualboxvm it says “no bootable medium found? system halted” help please?

    1. Dwayne Moore says:

You need to install a copy of Microsoft Windows into VirtualBox.

  20. Jeremy says:

I’m in the same boat as Clay and Kate

  21. Jason says:

Its a real shame you let all mac users go through the entire purchase path without mentioning this is a limited version only available for PC’s…. now I have to go through cancelling and finding something else. Downloading and installing a virtual machine is just not a alternative here to using your software.

    1. Johnny says:

It is clearly stated on the main page it is a windows only software, can’t write this on each and every page.

  22. Sara says:

Hi, I have a mac. Do you have any news for the mac version of massplanner? Second question: at night I often don’t have wi-fi, and when I travel if I install it on my imac I’ll not have the software with me… Is the solution with VPS better for me?

    1. Johnny says:

no version for mac as we’re not working on it. As for your second question, the computer needs to be on and to have internet connection so yeah, a VPS would be a lot better with this since you’re moving.

  23. agatha says:

When it first starts it will ask you what to install, choose the .iso file that you downloaded earlier and go through all the steps of installing Windows on your virtual machine. With this final step I accidentally skipped it away. And now I don’t know how to finish the last step??

    1. Johnny says:

Contact our supp if you still haven’t figured it out and they’ll see what they can do

  24. Andrew says:

I have the 90 day trial and Virtual Box Downloaded. Virtual box is running. When I click Massplanner-Setup I get “There is no application set to open the document “MassPlanner2-Setup (1).msi”.” and I don’t know how to launch it on the virtual box

  25. Truls Mörfelt says:

    Please make it IOS friendly!!

  26. Mara says:

Are there any plans of having a Mac-friendly MassPlanner?

  27. Mara says:

I just finished installing VirtualBox but I wasn’t asked to install anything. It’s just running now. Help!

    1. Johnny says:

Please contact our support and they will take a look.

  28. Mehdi says:

We need a Mac version please !

  29. Nick says:

Massplanner team, Any update on when you will be releasing a Mac / IOS version?

    1. Johnny says:

We aren’t working on one, so there’s no estimate, sorry.
